How Do I Know If I’m Being ‘Punished’ For Speaking Up?

February 19, 2026 by Elaine B

Add this to your  Power Plays Black Book- The Reference Trap

You speak up about something serious and, strangely, that’s when your world shrinks. Projects disappear, invites stop landing, and roles you’re perfect for somehow “go to someone else” before you even hear about them.

You’re handed foggy lines like “not sure they’re the right culture fit” or “some concerns were raised”, but nobody can tell you who said what or when.

That isn’t careful people management, it’s retaliation dressed up as process – a move I call the Reference Trap, where your name starts carrying a warning label you’re never allowed to read.

But, the more you contort yourself to look “easier” and “safer”, the more power that hidden label has over your future.

So treat it as what it is: narrative control being written without you.

Your job is to put your own version into circulation – asking for specific examples in writing, and regularly sending short, factual updates on your results and decisions so there is a clear, documented record that doesn’t begin and end with “some concerns”.
